This year, I am excited to celebrate my birthday the same way that I have for the past two years, by leading a team of dynamic and diverse women in building a home with Habitat for Humanity Chicago! As a board member and volunteer over the years, I have met countless women whose lives have been completely changed by the work of Habitat. They are women who have gained financial literacy through our Homebuyer University program, who have conquered their fears of heights and power tools on our build sites, and who have cultivated strong bonds by coming together year after year to leave a lasting legacy in the greatest city in the world, which we are fortunate to call home.
As a relatively new homeowner who grew up in an apartment, I personally appreciate the many ways that homeownership can create generational wealth, familial stability, and serve as an anchor to a community. I also have learned about the disgusting history of illegal and unethical policies and practices that have historically and continue to make it difficult for women and people of color to achieve "the American Dream." With today's record high home prices and interest rates, we literally cannot afford any artificial barriers of entry to homeownership.
That is why I am proud to lead a team on my birthday this year at Habitat Chicago's 2024 Women Build. I hope that you will join me in contributing to our team's $10,000 fundraising goal and my personal $1,000 goal, which will greatly help to provide an affordable home to a future first-time homeowner who otherwise would not be able to achieve this important goal. Together, we can raise $750,000 and advance construction on a group of homes in Greater Grand Crossing. Will you be a part of our legacy?
