Homeownership is "the American Dream." A home is more than a place of shelter; it is the place where families gather for holiday dinners and birthday celebrations; where a bedroom can transition into a home office, a nursery, and kid's bedroom over the years; where a cup of tea can be enjoyed on a quiet morning or where BBQ and game nights can be hosted. And even more than that, a home is an asset that increases its owner's quality of life and financial outlook. It can be passed down to future generations or can serve as the first step in a person's journey toward their dream home.
Unfortunately, these kinds of experiences and financial benefits enjoyed by homeowners are too often unavailable to women and people of color, particularly in Chicago, because of systemic discrimination in the real estate industry, in employment practices, and in the enforcement of criminal laws. Statistically, these groups are lagging far behind others in homeownership and wealth, and it's not for a lack of desire or potential. That is where we come in.
Habitat for Humanity Chicago believes that everyone deserves a safe and affordable home, and we have several programs to help our neighbors achieve this goal. In October, we will join over 700 other women in fundraising and contributing our own sweat equity to help provide the opportunity for future women to become homeowners who otherwise would not be able to purchase a home in today's record unaffordable market.
Built by Hers hopes to raise $10,000 toward Habitat Chicago's total goal of $750,000, and we're hitting the construction site on October 25th to help build the homes. Please help us reach our goal so we can help our sisters unlock the benefits that homeownership provides and prove that there is nothing a committed group of women can’t achieve when they come together.
Every donation helps to build a strong, stable, and equitable future.
