In a few months, I'm grabbing a hammer, strapping on a tool belt, and joining Habitat Chicago's Women Build alongside 780 determined women to knock down barriers to homeownership for women. Together, we will help other women become homeowners with Habitat Chicago, a nonprofit committed to championing healthy neighborhoods by investing in resident priorities, building quality homes, and supporting homeownership.
I participated in this amazing and rewarding effort last year and even met one of the women who would become an owner of one of the homes we worked on that day. She was working on homes right alongside us. She dreamed of having her whole family over for Sunday dinner and holidays. She was incredibly moved and full of gratitude by everyone’s efforts.
You may not realize that women face more barriers to homeownership than men do. From the gender pay gap, to disproportionate rates of mortgage denials despite superior payment history, to uneven childcare responsibilities that have a detrimental impact on time and finances, the hurdles keeping women from homeownership are high.
You can make a difference by helping me reach my fundraising goal. I’ll take care of the heavy lifting (very literally) on the day we build.
