The life-changing benefits of affordable homeownership are immense: it can improve school performance, improve financial outcomes, and enhance the health and well-being of children and adults – just to name a few. But due to gendered systemic barriers, like the pay gap and its impact on credit access and uneven childcare responsibilities that limit time and financial resources, it is far more difficult for women to become homeowners. It's even harder for Black women.
This is why Skeleton Crew is rolling up our sleeves and taking action. This October, we’re linking arms, picking up our power tools, and joining in Habitat for Humanity Chicago's Women Build to knock these barriers down. Alongside 780 determined women, we will raise $750,000 to help build Habitat Chicago homes that will be purchased by women with affordable mortgages! But this is more than fundraising, because we will be on the construction site building these homes on Saturday, October 26th.
