As many of you know, I have been furloughed for months since the COVID pandemic has significantly impacted my industry. While not ideal, it's afforded me a lot of time to think, to listen and to learn. During this quiet time, voices of the oppressed that have systematically been silenced have been able to push to the forefront. Voices we have been ignoring for years. This country has come face to face with the systemic injustices it has been perpetrating since its conception. I've been trying to come up with physical ways in which I can give back to nearby communities adversely affected by such injustices and came across the opportunity thanks to Jenna Brubaker! While this is just one small step, it's something that I would appreciate y’all helping me with.
This October, I'm grabbing my hammer, strapping on my tool belt, and heading to West Pullman, a south side Chicago neighbor that has been devastated by systemic racism, poverty and radical social inequality. Together, we will help our fellow women become homeowners with Habitat for Humanity Chicago's Women Build, a nonprofit committed to building a world where everyone has a safe, comfortable, affordable place to live.
Homeownership is one of the most dynamic tools a person can use to build a strong and stable future. However, it is a tool that far too many women, non binary, trans and POC are unjustly denied access. From the gender pay gap and its impact on credit profiles, to uneven child care responsibilities that consume time and financial resources, to higher rates of mortgage denials despite superior payment performance, the hurdles keeping women and POC from homeownership are high.
