Most people have a dream of owning their own place someday. We daydream about having an in-unit laundry-dryer combo that you can program to play music when it’s time to flip from wash to dry, or time or start folding those annoying little socks (and discover that you do, indeed, have a hungry sock monster). You storm pinterest in search for the perfect color of paint or the right size bookshelves or the incredibly clever under-the-bed or in-the-closet time-and-space saving *thing* that will help your life function just a little bit better. And suddenly, your google feed is parading in pictures of dogs for adoption and articles on statistics about what neighborhood is best to raise your unborn children in.
But did you know that homeowning is significantly more difficult for single women than it is for single men? And that women are denied mortgages at higher rates than men are? With just those struggles, it seems like a daunting task to achieve that dream of becoming a homeowner.
Well. I’m volunteering with Habitat for Humanity on October 13th to help a few families realize that dream. I’ll be picking up a hammer or holding a wall in place or traversing with 2x4-s from one end to the other, because I was given the opportunity to be part of the solution by my dear friend, Hannah. We will be joining women from across Chicagoland to completely fund and begin building the home of a woman-led family AND celebrate all of the women purchasing affordable homes with Habitat for Humanity Chicago.
In addition to giving of my time, I’ve donated $50 to my page to help our team make our goal of $5000. I am so excited and proud to be part of this project, along with over 300 other women who will come together to support their community through their time and efforts.
You can also make a difference. Help me reach my goal of $350 so we can change the lives of these women forever and prove that there's nothing a woman can't do when she sets her mind to it. I appreciate any support you can give - big, small, or somewhere in between. In fact, if you donate $15, I’ll write you a postcard describing the experience. If you donate $25, I’ll write you a personal letter about it. $50? I’ll write you a letter and insert a small watercolor painting that I’ve done. $75 or more? All the previous, and I’ll knit you a scarf.
I sincerely hope that you’ll join me in supporting Habitat for Humanity!
