No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to have a decent life. We deserve to feel strength and stability day after day. We deserve to know we have the power to take care of ourselves and build our own futures.
At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Because you, me, we - we're all humans. And every single one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.
What we do
Through affordable housing, beautification, and development projects, Habitat for Humanity Chicago brings people together to build a city that works for all of its residents. We focus our work geographically to maximize impact so that families and neighborhoods alike can thrive.
Currently, our work is focused on the South Side in the West Pullman and Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods.
Why it matters
Chicago is a unique city, full of grit, determination, possibility, and we are proud to call it home. But too many of our neighbors are getting left behind. One in 10 Chicagoans currently suffer from inadequate housing and four in 10 live in declining neighborhood conditions.
Here are just three reasons we are working to change this trajectory:
Employment Stability. Affordable housing located near mass transit or job centers provides additional employment prospects and greater employee retention.
Academic Advancement. Children who grow up in the same home are more likely to remain in a consistent learning environment and are more likely to graduate from high school and college.
Improved Health. Families who live in quality housing experience fewer health issues, dedicated 2x as much of their income to their health and take more preventative measures to stay well.
Bottom line: Housing matters. Neighborhoods matter.
