You might remember that for the past three years, I’ve participated in Habitat for Humanity’s Chicago Women Build with my female architecture colleagues at Holabird & Root. I had a great experience working alongside many other women to improve the life of one particular women and her children by helping to build them a home. My friends and family have continued to play a part in this event over the years through their generous support of my fundraising efforts. This year, we’re back at it once more, with Holabird & Root building on October 11th.
Over the course of the five-day Chicago Women Build event this October, over 300 women will come together to help fund and build the home of a deserving family. Each event participant raises over $350 toward the cost of the home, and donates one day of labor towards the construction process. Simultaneously, the receiving family partners with Habitat for Humanity by completing 350 sweat equity hours, attending homeowner education classes, and saving up for a down payment. Once the home is built, the family is able to purchase it from Habitat with a minimal down payment and an affordable 0% interest mortgage, effectively boosting them out of the rent cycle and into the world of opportunities that is homeownership. The process can truly change a life!
Will you help me make a decent home a reality for the woman-led Martin family? If so, please make a donation to my personal fundraising page (you're on it!).
