Women Build 101
This annual event seeks to bring women together to help women homebuyers overcome the gendered barriers to homeownership. This October, we will accomplish three incredible feats:
- Raise $700,000 to help make homeownership a reality for women purchasing affordable homes with Habitat Chicago.
- Advance construction of multiple homes in one of our focus neighborhoods throughout October.
- Use our collective voices to call attention to the obstacles that women, especially Black women, face when becoming homeowners.
The Basics
WHAT: A month-long home-building event, bringing together hundreds of women to celebrate our strengths, have a blast, and build stronger futures for our fellow women through safe and affordable homeownership.
WHEN: Women Build will take place over 12 days throughout the month of October:
- Thursday, October 2nd - Saturday, October 4th
- Thursday, October 9th - Saturday, October 11th
- Thursday, October 16th - Saturday, October 18th
- Thursday, October 23rd - Saturday, October 25th
WHERE: The Habitat Chicago build sites in one of our focus neighborhoods. Stay tuned!
How Women Build Works
Each Women Builder commits to building on-site for one full day of the event (no construction experience necessary!) and meeting the fundraising minimum, earning prizes along the way. There are two ways you can participate:
Be a Team Leader
Each Team Leader will:
- Attend the Team Leader Kickoff on June 26th.
- Commit to fundraising and building one day of the event.
- Recruit nine (9) women to join their team.
- Commit to helping your team raise a minimum of $8,500.
- Motivate their team members and ensure they have a whole lot of fun every step of the way.
- Coordinate with their team to get everyone registered and ready to build.
Be an Individual Builder
If you are interested in coming out solo or with a friend or two, then this role is perfect for you! Each Individual Builder will:
- Join a team with open spots (we will get you matched up with a team, dependent upon availability).
- Commit to fundraising at least $500 and building one day of the event.

Women Build History
Our inaugural Women Build in 2013 brought 18 women together to raise $8,000 and complete a home repair project in West Pullman. Since then, we've grown tremendously and have accomplished a great deal, including:
- Raising more than $4.3 million dollars in just 12 years.
- Hosting over 780 Women Builders over the course a month—some dedicated volunteers who have been participating for 8+ years!
- Being featured on multiple, major news outlets, like CBS, ABC, NBC, and more.
- Building more than 25 homes in two different neighborhoods for women-led households, supporting their journey toward homeownership.
About Habitat Chicago
At Habitat Chicago, our focus is on the health and vitality of neighborhoods in the city. This means that we take a focused approach working in specific neighborhoods, layering on programs that contribute to neighborhood health in conjunction with others hard at work in the community. We’re currently at work within three communities: West Pullman, Greater Grand Crossing, and Austin.
Our programming and services:
- Affordable Homeownership Program - The Affordable Homeownership Program offers qualified first-time homebuyers the opportunity to purchase a home with an affordable mortgage. Once in the program, participants take homebuying education classes, volunteer their time toward the Habitat Chicago mission, meet homeowners and fellow buyers, and receive regular support from our staff.
- Homebuyer University - Taught by professionals in the real estate field, Homebuyer University is a public-facing education series that provides resources and tools to help Chicagoans through their first-time homebuying journey.
- Neighborhood Grants Initiative - The Neighborhood Grants Initiative provides small grants to resident-led projects that aim to improve the physical, social, and economic landscape of our focus neighborhoods.
- ReStore Chicago - Located on the North and South Side, ReStore Chicago sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, home décor, building materials, tools, and more. All proceeds help fund Habitat Chicago programming and home construction in our focus neighborhoods. Donate, volunteer, and shop!
