A stable place to call Home is where it all starts - it means consistent school enrollment, familiar neighbors, established routines. It is something many in my family helped build/maintain back home in Wisconsin and ensuring folks have access to it now is something I am proud to spend my days working toward here in Chicago, as part of the Habitat Chicago staff. I'm really excited to be doing it a little differently this year as part of Women Build!
Though homeownership is one of the most dynamic tools a person can use to build a strong and stable future, it is a tool that has remained out of reach for far too many - too many women more specifically. From the gender pay gap and its impact on credit profiles, to uneven childcare responsibilities that consume time and financial resources, to higher rates of mortgage denials despite superior payment performance, the hurdles keeping women from homeownership are high.
This October, I'm stepping out of the office and grabbing my hammer, joining Habitat Chicago's Women Build to build alongside hundreds of determined women in an effort to raise walls and awareness for affordable housing. Together, we will help folks become homeowners through Habitat Chicago's Affordable Homeownership Program, a program that pairs new home construction with an affordable, fixed-rate mortgage.
