(This event is aimed at addressing the effects of substandard housing for single women and their children.)
This cause is near & dear to my heart. I was a single mother years ago, struggling to make ends meet with 2 very boy...boys, rent, car note, costly childcare, & household bills. I enrolled in college to make myself more valuable & marketable in the work force to make more money, so then there were college expenses, books, more gas in the car, additional, unreliable, childcare. Although I was on the Deans list, with a gpa of 4.0, I was threatened to be kicked out because of missing too much class time, due to a lack of childcare. I couldn't see the light of day for trying sometimes. I went through 2 evictions, 2 near misses of eviction, displacement because an owner needed my living space, and being fired from employment, all because of daycare issues, which I could not afford due to not making enough money. I had very little support with my children to do what I needed to in order to survive without such a struggle.
If you believe in the impact a group of women can have when they come together to empower one another, and you think you have what it takes to get out on the build site, build a home, and change a life, join my team. I need 8 more women to make the sponsoring family's dream come true. Can't see yourself building...a donation is much appreciated too.
A few facts:
Over 259,000 families are in need of safe/affordable housing in Chicago alone.
Currently, 41.2% of female-headed households with no spouse live in poverty in Illinois. This figure is nearly double that of male-headed households with children.
Women Build brings together a community of women to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing for single family households of women & children in Illinois, while making homeownership a reality for them.
We CAN make a difference in the life of a hard-working Chicago family! Looking back, I can see how huge an impact this would have made in my life as a single parent. No evictions, because I would have had secure, affordable housing, that would have been MINE, and that monthly rental expense, could have gone towards childcare, which would have allowed me to keep my job, attend school without the unnecessary, continued distraction of, ..."who will I get to keep my boys this week?"...and childcare bills would not have gone unpaid because of losing my job.
Everything could have been more positive for me, had I been afforded this opportunity, which is a game changer. One that I am willing to give back to for our sponsored family this July...because personally, I get it! Get it with me - won't you?
