Why I Do Women Build:

Homeownership is one of the most dynamic tools a person can use to build a strong and stable future. It enhances the health and wellbeing for both children and adults by decreasing crime, and improving financial outcomes and school performance. However, far too many women-led families are unjustly denied access to this tool. From the gender pay gap and its impact on credit profiles, to uneven child care responsibilities that consume time and financial resources, to higher rates of mortgage denials despite superior payment performance, the hurdles keeping women from homeownership are high.

During Women Build, 450 determined women grab their hammers, strap on their tool belts, and work together to knock those barriers down. Together, we help fellow women become homeowners with Habitat Chicago, a nonprofit committed to building a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Last year, I was part of an alumni panel at my alma mater. During the panel, I mentioned my involvement in Women Build and asked if any of the students were familiar with Habitat Chicago. One of the students in the audience raised their hand and spoke about how their mother purchased her family's home through Habitat Chicago. It was inspiring to witness first hand the tangible impact that homeownership can have on opening up doors for the next generation.

You can make a difference. Help me reach my fundraising goal so we can change the lives of these women and their families forever and prove that there's nothing a group of committed women can't do.
